A recent ecommerce seminar claimed that 95% of websites get 10 visitors or less a day. From my own experience with new clients who have tried to build their own websites, this is very typical. But, with attention to simple proven techniques, and consistent effort, it is possible to grow such a site to receive 300 - 500 visitors a day, or more.
- Before Starting Your Site: Put together enough notes to build 50-100 pages of real content. Copyright, contact-us, terms of service, privacy, these are all extras that you should have in addition to 50-100 real pages of content.
- Site Design: Keep the site design simple. You'll save a lot of money, and not loose any visitors, if you forget about things like flash, dom, java, and java script. If you must have dynamic effects on your site, try to stick with simple Javascript. If you keep the site design simple, you'll also have a site that will be closer to compliance with various accessibility standards.
- Want an idea for site design: Study the google website itself. Simple is best.
- Arrangement: Arrange your files into logical directories, preferably directories that include keywords you want to get traffic from
- Page names: Use good keyword rich page names (Search for keyword rich page), 1 to 4 words. Avoid page1.htm and page2.htm type page names that show extreme lack of imagination.
- Avoid large megapages... 15K or smaller webpages should be the goal. 5000 to 10000 bytes is best.
- New Content: Write a new article every day. Aim for 200-500 to words.
- Overture has a keyword suggestion tool (Search for keyword suggestion tool) in their advertiser center that can help give you ideas of other phrases that people actually look for that are related to your main topics. Use these suggestions to write articles around the phrases.
- Check your spelling, and use good grammar. Search engines now offer spelling correction when people are searching, so you want to be sure to have correct spelling.
- Put your target keywords in all these places:
- Title
- Description meta tag
- In a heading
- In the url
- In bold in the main text
- In italics in the main text
- And also high on the page
- Linking to other pages: Link your article to one or two high ranking sites about your keyword topics, and use your target keywords (Search) in the link.
- Link the article to other related articles on your site.
- Use various online validators to check your pages for compliance with HTML standards.
- After you have been building your site for a few weeks, set aside a budget for paying for listings in directories such as Looksmart and Yahoo. Also try to get listed in Open Directory. Also list yourself in directories such as [Truly Open Directory].
- Submit your home page one time to each of these search engines:
- Make sure your host supports good logging and traffic. Webalizer is the minimum you should have.
- Watch your logs for visits from the search engine spiders. You need a good log analysis tool, such as Webalizer?Create|Search
- Watch your logs for "page not found" errors which may indicate broken links in your site. Find the links and fix them.
- Send out one link exchange email a day to other sites related to yours, requesting an exchange of links.
- Continue to develop more quality content
- Respond to people who request links from your site, but first check out their site and make sure that it i compliments your own site, and actually has a link to your site.
- Add timely content to your site.
